What are the Processes Involved in Producing Sparkling Wine

Many centuries have passed and yet sparkling wine is still thought of to the the celebration wine for a lot of people. The name was thought of because of its fizzy look. The presence of the bubbles in the wine is caused by the carbon dioxide created from the special process called secondary fermentation. Secondary fermentation procedure can either happen in the bottle or a pressure tank where ingredients like wine, yeast and sugar are processed.

A lot of diverse methods can be used in making a sparkling wine. The traditional or Methode Champenoise method, the evolved or Transfer method, the Charmat Bulk procedure and the carbonation/injection method. Visit http://www.squidoo.com/sparkling-wine to learn more about wines.

First and earliest method applied in making sparkling wines is the Methode Champenoise. The secondary fermentation takes place in a bottle to which the sugar and yeast is added. The bottle then is properly closed and precisely stored in a slightly upside-down position. While fermentation is taking place, the bottled undergoes riddling or shaking so that the dead yeast will go down in the head of the bottle. The neck of the bottle will be frozen after the fermentaion procedure so that the yeast still stay on top, the cap is skillfully taken out popping the dead yeast out of the bottle. It is then resealed by a cork and ready for consumption.

Transfer method is another procedure of making spakling wines which evolve in the Methode Champenoise. With transfer method, the processes are same to that of the Methode Champenoise and only difference is that the procedure does not include shaking or riddling to remove the sediment but instead the wine is transferred to a pressurized tank where the sediment is filtered. Finally, it is bottled, corked, and secured with a wire hood before it is being sold in the market.

Meanwhile, on the Charmat Bulk procedure, the secondary fermentation takes place inside a big pressurized tank. When producing a large volume of sparkling wine, this is an efficient method. Charmat Bulk procedure is known to be the fastest and least expensive way to make sparkling wines. Sugar and yeast are added inside a temperature-controlled, big pressure tank when applying the Charmat Bulk process. The quality of the sparkling wine in this process is not as good as the procedure done in the traditional method. It can also be observed that the bubbles in this wine are larger because it spent lesser time compared to the traditional method.

As for the carbonation process, carbon dioxide is injected to the wine. When fermentation is done, wine is bubbled or carbonated same to the process used for softdrinks. This is also a quick and less expensive procedure but loses the quality of the sparkling wine.

Overall, the Methode Champenoise is the most expensive and requires more effort to make a sparkling wine but it is the best in making a good quality wine. Production of wine in this process is not abused because natural fermentation occurs and there are no excessive movements.

There are many makers of sparkling wine all over the world. Quality and price of sparkling wine will depend on both quality of the materials used as well as the method used. Whatever method is used to create sparkling wine, it is still the customer who will choose what to buy.
